City of Ann Arbor Historic Preservation:  There are 1,662 properties in designated historic districts within the Ann Arbor area with more under consideration.  These districts are governed by the Ann Arbor City Ordinance called Chapter 103 as allowed by Michigan's Local Historic District Act (Public Act 169 of 1970).  This ordinance protects historic properties from alteration or demolition.  The commission reviews work to the exterior of a resource in a district to ensure that original historic materials are retained and that a proposed project's design is in keeping with the massing, materials, style and time period of the house.
